Simulating Metaphyseal Fracture Healing in the Distal Radius

Simulating diaphyseal fracture healing via numerical models has been investigated for a long time. It is apparent from in vivo studies that metaphyseal should follow similar biomechanical rules although the speed and pattern might differ. To investigate this hypothesis, pre-existing, well-established model was extended to study bone healing. Clinical data of distal radius fractures were compared corresponding geometrically patient-specific simulations. The model, able predict realistic process wide variety geometries. Endochondral mainly intramembranous ossification predicted fractured area without callus formation. therefore, appears appropriate under differing mechanical conditions different bones types. Nevertheless, outlined conducted simplified rotational symmetric case. Further may extend three-dimensional representation complex shapes. This will help optimize clinical treatments radial fractures, medical implant design foster research
